The Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that the Jubilee Party knew Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was “incompetent “and “incapable” and hence they gave him a Deputy Governor(Polycarp Igathe) with top most abilities in managerial skills in order to hide his misgivings. The lawmaker revealed the Nairobi city chief was supposed to handle the city’s politics as his deputy was to subsequently to ran serious affairs of Kenya’s capital city(Nairobi).
The Jubilee legislator was spoke on Monday, November 25, during Citizen TV’s daybreak show stating, “The original idea was that this guy (Mike Sonko-The Nairobi Governor) could not and cannot manage county affairs. We gave him a deputy who could run the county affairs smoothly and efficiently but frustrations forced and coerced him to quit,” Gachagua said.
The vocal MP further said,”Sonko is embarrassing the party by boasting about his criminal record. These are hard lessons we as Nairobi are now learning. Sonko has been bragging everywhere about his credentials of serving in different prisons and punching people,” he added.
Gachagua, a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto, further indicated that the party should summon the controversial governor and makes sure he appoints a capable deputy with managerial skills.
He is quoted saying, “We need now to take the bull by the horn as a party, and call Mike Mbuvi Sonko and say you are embarrassing the party,” the MP said.
Nairobi Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe resigned on Friday, November 12, noting he could not work with a boss who does not trust him. The corporate executive said that he had failed to win Sonko’s trust to run administration and management of the county government.
In May 2018, the embattled governor who is facing corruption charges nominated exiled lawyer Miguna Miguna as his deputy in a letter dated Wednesday, May 16, 2018. His nomination was however, rejected by Nairobi City County Assembly on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, due to the lawyer’s controversial dual citizenship.
On Thursday, November 14, ousted Nairobi County Assembly Majority Leader Abdi Guyo sensationally alleged Sonko was the city’s top cartel.
The Matopeni MCA said he had evidence the flamboyant governor was plundering the county’s resources and “pretending to be clean”.
