The Uasin Gishu gubernatorial race is headed for a major political battle to win the April 21 party primaries as the two major contestants for the seat, the incumbent governor Mandago and his strongest opponent Kiprop Bundotich aka Buzeki, face off for the seat.
With the campaigns entering the homestretch just before the primaries, the two camps have lined up a series of parallel rallies for their candidates.
Buzeki is expected to fight it out with Mandago in what has been reduced to a two horse race, even though there are other opponents such as Dr. Edward Serem, Felix Butit and the bicycle aspirant Mr. Solomon Kiptarbei.
Residents of Ziwa ward in Soy constituency, Uasin Gishu county, today treated Buzeki to a grand, heroic welcome.
Buzeki, who was together with his running mate Dr. Samson Cheruiyot, made a grand entry into Ziwa, after landing from his branded Eurocopter chopper, and later made their way to the Ziwa grounds where a mammoth crowd was waiting for their arrival.
Scores of boda boda riders, motorists and residents flocked the streets of Ziwa, singing songs of praise for the aspirant and his running mate, vowing to remove the incumbent and bring in their new governor Buzeki.
This is just part of a series of major rallies scheduled in Buzeki’s well oiled campaign as the party primaries are just less than two weeks away.
The incumbent is facing stiff competition, with political pundits saying these campaigns are perhaps the most heated in the county and in Kenya, and the incumbent will have to up his game to save face.
Mandago will be trying to save his image and stamp his authority through his reelection bid.
