The Jubilee Party primaries that were scheduled for last Friday, April 21 2017, failed to take off owing to shortage of ballot papers in various counties, which had been listed for the exercise.
Uasin Gishu was one of the counties where the exercise was called off over the same issue, besides many other counties, which the party’s head of secretariat, Raphael Tuju has since announced new dates from tomorrow Monday 24th to Wednesday 26th 2017.
Governor Jackson Mandago, who is facing one of the most heated gubernatorial contests in the country, from his strongest opponent Zedekiah Buzeki Kiprop Bundotich, led a group of aspirants from the county to protest and later ‘called off’ the exercise.
But, it is what the governor did in Eldoret town, when they blocked a section of the town in protest, and he led the crowd in a song meant for a circumcision ritual, which many say is a literal call to war.
Uasin Gishu residents have come out to demand an immediate apology from the governor, expressing their total disgust at the manner in which he carried himself in the heat of the moment.
In a statement sent to the press, signed by elders, men, women and youth of the county, the residents say they are tired of the dictatorial manner in which the governor has been lording over them, and are ready to bring in a new leader, Buzeki.
The statement read (in part):
“We strongly condemn the outrageous, uncultured, and backward act Governor Mandago performed in Eldoret on Friday April 21 2017, through a ritual meant only for and as a rite of passage.
This, in our view is an ABOMINATION to God, to the fathers, mothers and children of Uasin Gishu, to our elders, and to all families of our beloved county.
WE DEMAND AN IMMEDIATE APOLOGY FROM GOVERNOR JACKSON MANDAGO, and ask him to desist from using us as tools of vengeance in his campaign.
We must say Governor Mandago publicly embarrassed us on Friday, on NTV and CITIZEN TV, after feeding us with LIES about Buzeki, yet he could not speak the same on TV. He went further to lie on Citizen TV that he has a 10 year plan for the county, yet he only had a 10 POINT PLAN FOR 2013!
We will not sit down and be insulted by the governor. We woke up very early to vote for him and he is now showing us how thankless he is.
True leaders do not insult the people, they engage constructively. To insult the people of Uasin Gishu the way Mandago did yesterday is very unfortunate so we demand a public apology to all people of Uasin Gishu as a matter of urgency.
Otherwise we have DECAMPED to Buzeki team, and intend to vote him in, en masse, come Tuesday April 25, 2017.”
The party primaries have been scheduled for Tuesday April 25th, 2017 for the Uasin Gishu county.
